Finding The Fun In The Rainy

Author: Rebecca Leihner  |  Category: Children

Rainy days can be a real bummer, especially if you are a kid that wants to go play outside. Waking up and seeing that it is going to be a rainy day can be very depressing to little ones. Having some ideas for rainy day indoor activities can brighten the day.

1. Going to the library is a great rainy day adventure. Your kids can pick out books and bring them home to read.

2. Kids like to watch movies; that’s a fact. A good education movie on a rainy day is a great plan. Education movies are very easy to find and benefit everyone. The kids are satisfied and the mom feels good about the entertainment choice.

3. Having an idea box is also a good idea to cure the rainy day blues. It will be a lot of fun for the kids to go to the box and pick out surprise activities.

4. Having a dress-up tea party is fun too. You could even take more rainy day time and make poodle skirts to wear to your tea party. This can be great fun for moms and daughters.

5. Another fun time killer is playing board games. The sky is the limit for choices and varieties available. Puzzles are also a good idea and smaller children tend to love them.

6. A game called reverse writing’ is a great challenge for slightly older children. The object is to write a sentence backwards. After writing it in reverse you bring it to a mirror and see how they did. This can provide hours of entertainment.

7. Baking cookies is always fun. Kids love to mix the dough and gather the ingredients needed. It gives a great feeling of achievement to the little ones. The smell of them baking and enjoying the finished product will be a great rainy day distraction.

Tips When Choosing Fireplace Screens: Function And Design

Author: Jeff Bridges  |  Category: Womens

If you have the pleasure of a fireplace, you know what a luxury it can be. Nothing is more cozy, especially in cooler weather, than curling up next to the crackling fire with a cup of hot cocoa. Once fireplaces were the standard for every home; they were a necessity. Now with modern-day central heating, they are more decorative and for pleasure. There are also risks involved with fireplaces, and fireplace screens are a necessary precaution.

You have probably noticed that sometimes a fire will suddenly pop loudly; this is the result of air pockets in the wood exploding. While this sound can be enjoyable, it is also a hazard in the home. Pieces of burning wood and ash can be thrown from the fire onto your flooring or carpet. To keep your home from this hazard, you need the protection of a fireplace screen.

You must make sure that you know what size screen needs to be purchased for your fireplace, as they come in various shapes and sizes. The best plan is to measure the height and width of your fireplace before you start shopping. Then you add 10 to 12 inches to the width and 3 to 5 inches to the height. This will give you the ideal size you should be looking for.

You will also need to choose whether a single or double paneled screen is best for your fireplace. The simplest fireplace will use a single panel; this screen can be easily placed in a straight line across the fireplace. Multi-paneled screens can be slightly more complicated, but they can also be more decorative. This option really depends on what type of person you are and whether you are more interested in simplicity and function or design and decor.

There are various designs of fireplace screens available. You will want to find a screen that fits into the general decorating scheme of your home and compliments it. Fireplaces are often the focal point of the room they are in, and a fireplace screen can be a nice addition to make it more attractive and draw the eye away from the darkness of the fireplace.

As far as design, this will also depend on the decor of your home and your personal style. There are traditional screens, which are more classic and simple. Antique screens are elegant and usually feature designs with scrolls and curves. Designer screens are for the more modern touch, and outdoor screens are usually black to go with almost any decor scheme.

There are many different colors and finished available in fireplace screens. The color you choose should compliment the dominant color of the room in which it will be placed.
